Points of discussion "Contrast"in Cape Town

Opposite sides of the same coin!

Lwandle Migrant Labour Museum Home

Welcome to Lwandle Migrant Labour Museum!

lwanlogo.jpg

Visit the first township based museum in the Western Cape and the first museum to commemorate migrancy in South Africa.

Experience the hospitality of our true African township, Lwandle. We are easy to find: Situated on the N2 outside Somerset West, en route to Hermanus and the Garden Route.

Learn more about the Migrant Labour System (1958 – 1994), walk through an original historic hostel and view the whole township on a guided walk.

We started in 1958 as single dwelling hostels for migrant workers. Inlwanexhi.jpg 1995 it was incorporated into the Helderberg Council. It is now a vibrant community of families.

After the other Lwandle hostels were upgraded as part of the local RDP project, the only original hostel unit - Hostel 33 - is a reminder of the conditions under which migrant workers were compelled to live.

Located in the former community hall, our museum exhibits commemorate the trials, tribulations and triumphs of migrant workers and hostel life in Southern Africa.

Located in the former municipal beer hall, the Art & Crafts Centre now produces a variety of handcrafts and encourages creativity and artistic talent. It is well worth a visit.

You can also purchase postcards, beadwork and other locally produced souvenirs from the gift shop.

In addition to a permanent and temporary exhibition, various cultural activities are held like drama, dance, choral music and educational workshops.
Join our township walk - Starting from the museum, the guided walk includes meeting the residents, by visiting the Hector Peterson Library, Hostel 33, the Betheli Creche, the Town Square, the “Eiffel Tower”, the Primary School, shops, homes, the Tavern and finally the Arts and Crafts Centre. Then back to the museum.

You have viewed the exhibition, visited Hostel 33, charted with the locals now is the time to digest historic moments, take a deep breath and enjoy African menu and other variety of delicious foods with comfort of soft African contemporary jazz in the Imbizo Restaurant.
